Claire and I didn’t have fun that last week before the premiere, and neither did Elsa or Peter. Boyd, on the other hand, had himself a regular carnival. With the bugs now in place, Peter hung on every word Boyd uttered, and the wily old goat milked the situation for all the malicious fun it was worth.

The two men, both being potentates of publishing, traveled in much the same exalted circles and hobnobbed with many of the same industry leaders. Though these media muck-a-mucks publicly treated Peter with the deference due his wealth and influence, most privately regarded him with an energetic loathing to which Peter, being Peter, was largely oblivious.

But when Radio Larkin began its broadcast season, Boyd began inviting these luminaries to a series of dinner parties. There, encouraged by their host’s superb wines and surgical tongue, they delivered themselves of the most devastatingly frank appraisals of Peter and Elsa’s style, taste, and personal appearances. Galling as it must have been for Peter to plow through transcripts containing so many disagreeable observations, he didn’t dare skip a word lest he miss some crucial nugget that would provide ammunition against the enemy he now more than ever wished to destroy. Alas, no such nuggets emerged.

More frustrating still for Peter was the lack of any statement proving Boyd enjoyed sexual relations with jailbait, or men at all, for that matter. Several times Boyd seemed to flirt with some young male member of his staff. The conversation between them would grow insinuating until the air was pregnant with innuendo. But then someone would come in or the phone would ring and the servant would be dismissed. The most maddening moment of all came when Boyd, broadcasting from the boudoir, coyly asked his strapping young masseur to fetch a new “toy” from under the bed. The masseur, crouching to remove the item, said, “Hey, someone left gum under your bed,” and Boyd said, “Well, flush it down the toilet—then hurry right hack!”
